Notices to Mariners issued in 2008
Alterations to Irish Lights aids to navigation are
announced by Notices to Mariners which are promulgated by mail,
e-mail, Irish Lights' web site, and radio navigation warnings. The
following Notices to Mariners were issued in 2008:
No. 1 - 14 December 2007: caution to mariners navigating around the coast of Ireland to exercise care to avoid damage to floating Aids to Navigation.
No. 2 - 21 December 2007: conclusion of system verification and calibration of the GLAs' new enhanced Loran (eLoran) station on 21 December 2007, and declaration of the station to be fully operational on 15 January 2008.
No. 3 - 29 February 2008: withdrawal of the three unlighted buoys presently marking the extent of the Ballykinler Firing Practice Area, Dundrum Bay from 6 May 2008, and establishment of two lighted special mark buoys to mark the south-east and south-west corners of an extended Firing Practice Area.
No. 4 - 1 March 2008: permanent withdrawal of Arklow No. 1 and No. 2 buoys from 12 April 2008.
No. 5 - 2 March 2008: establishment of a temporary light with a reduced range at Dundalk (Pile) Lighthouse from 9 April 2008; and permanent removal of the red sector and establishment of a new white light with a range of 21 nautical miles from 19 April 2008.
No. 6 - 3 March 2008: alteration and synchronisation of the flash characters of the Calmines, South Holdens, and Splaugh buoys from 30 April 2008.
No. 7 - 26 April 2008: temporary deployment of a lighted Wave Test Buoy 165 metres north-east of the South Hunter Buoy from 2 May 2008 for a period of approximately two months.
No. 8 - 26 April: alteration of the white light at Muglins Lighthouse to red from 24 June 2008.
No. 9 - 26 April 2008: disestablishment of the ruined Barrel Rock Beacon in Courtmacsherry Bay as an aid to navigation from 1 June 2008.
No. 10 - 30 May 2008: establishment of a new lighted buoy and disestablishment of beacon at Dillisk Rocks on 14 June.
No. 11 - 30 May 2008: discontinuation of the fixed red turning light at Haulbowline Lighthouse on 16 July 2008.
No. 12 - 25 July 2008: establishment of experimental Black Rock Buoy on 15 September 2008.
No. 13 - 25 July 2008: permanent withdrawal of Mutton Island Buoy on 5 September 2008.
No. 14 - 26 September 2008: alteration of the character of the navigation light at Mine Head Lighthouse on 7 November 2008.
No. 15 - 1 October 2008: commencement of use of Automatic Identification System (ais) as an aid to navigation at selected fixed and floating stations on the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland.
No. 16 - 21 November 2008: withdrawal of Carlingford Safe Water Mark Buoy on or about 15 December 2008.
No. 17 - 21 November 2008: upgrade of tower and reduction in range of Buncrana Lighthouse on or about 27 February 2009. A temporary light is to be displayed from 17 January 2009.
No. 18 - 21 November 2008: alteration in characters and synchronisation of Dun Laoghaire East and West Pier Lights on or about 20 January.
No. 19 - 21 November 2008: upgrade of South East Blackwater Buoy to an East Cardinal Superbuoy and a six mile light with Racon and AIS on or about 13 January; the position of the buoy to be moved 0.8 nautical miles eastwards. At the same time the East Blackwater Buoy will be permanently withdrawn.
No. 20 - 21 November 2008: permanent discontinuation of the fog signal at Haulbowline Lighthouse, Carlingford Lough, on or about 8 January.
No. 21 - 21 November 2008: upgrade of the North & South Burford Buoys to transmit AIS messages as an aid to navigation on or about 9 January. At the same time the wave activated whistles on these buoys will be permanently discontinued.
No. 22 - 21 November 2008: transmission of Automatic Identification System (AIS) as an aid to navigation from the following stations by 15 January 2009: Existing stations - Coningbeg Buoy, Bore Rocks Buoy, Red Bank Buoy, Cork Buoy, Old Head of Kinsale Lighthouse;
New stations - North Burford Buoy, South Burford Buoy, Codling LANBY, Arklow LANBY, South-East Blackwater Buoy, Hook Head Lighthouse, Strangford Buoy, Skulmartin Buoy, No. 3 Larne Buoy, Bennet Bank Buoy.
