Integration at Dun Laoghaire

In 2002 the Board commissioned architects and planners to develop proposals and to seek planning permission for a new integrated facility in Dun Laoghaire. After receiving the planning consultant's report and examining a number of development options, a design team led by Scott Tallon Walker, Architects, was appointed to produce a feasibility report and scheme options.

The scheme subsequently approved by the Board proposes the removal of all existing structures on the site and their replacement in a modern and more rational layout. The proposed complex will comprise a new circular office building linked to new engineering maintenance and operational facilities. The aim is to create a facility that will meet the future needs of the Service, with as low a profile as possible to minimise its visual impact on the surrounding environment. A range of technologies representing best practice in energy use and environmental design will be used to create a state of the art low energy, low maintenance complex.

The proposal is to construct on the site two buildings connected by an integral link corridor. The engineering facilities are grouped together in a rectilinear structure at the western end. The remaining functions generally comprising administration, technical, and common support facilities will be housed in a circular predominately open plan building to the east. The overall site is divided by the new buildings to provide an access and parking zone to the south, leaving the remaining site to the north as a quayside operational working area. The office accommodation will be adaptable to meet the changing needs of the Service into the future. The new facility will provide an improved working environment for all employees.

The business case for the integration project has been presented to our sponsoring Government Departments. A final decision on the project will be made in 2004 following completion of the planning process.
