Tory Island Lighthouse - Vital Statistics

Position: 55° 16.4' North, 08° 14.9' West
Light established: 1832
Structure: Granite tower, painted black with white band.
Height of tower: 27 metres
Height of light above mean high water springs: 40 metres
Character of light: Four white flashes every 30 seconds. The light is exhibited continuously by day and by night.
Nominal range of light: 27 nautical miles
Optic: Biform 1330mm dioptric annular lens with PRB22 gearless drive.
Main Light: MBI 1kW electric lamp; similar standby lamp in lower tier of optic automatically comes into operation if the main light fails.
Emergency Light: Two Tideland ML300 max lumina lanterns with in-built flashers mounted on the balcony rail, range 6 nautical miles. If the main and standby lights both fail the emergency lanterns automatically operate in the hours of darkness, both synchronised to flash together to the same character as the main light.

DGPS Correction Signal: Trimble GPS Differential Correction Signal (DGPS) equipment consisting of a duplicated Reference Station and Integrity Monitor. Four gps antennas on the lantern dome platform receive the raw signals from the GPS satellites.
The data is processed by computer and the correction and integrity data is transmitted by Amplidan NDB type 15771 medium frequency dual transmitter on 288.5 kiloHertz. The transmitter has a range of 200 nautical miles.
Power Supply: Three Lister HR2 diesel engines with Newage 12 kiloWatt alternators with control system, batteries and chargers.
Remote monitoring/Control System: Datac 900 remote telemetry unit. Indications are transmitted by Eircom lines to the Lighthouse Depot, Dun Laoghaire and Irish Lights Office, Dublin.
Communications: Telephone; marine VHF radio telephone; and aeronautical VHF radio telephone.
Transport: 10 metre diameter circular helipad in lighthouse compound. Helicopter operates from Irish Lights Helibase at Fanad Head Lighthouse. Fuel and heavy or bulky items are delivered by ILV Granuaile. There is also a public ferry service to the island.
