On his election as Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alderman Maurice Ahern became ex officio a Commissioner of Irish Lights, and took his seat on the Board on 22 September 2000.
Alderman Ahern is a long-time activist for the Fianna Fail party. He is Vice Chairman of the Dublin Central Area Committee of Dublin Corporation, a member of the Corporation's Strategic Policy Committee for Arts, Culture, Leisure and Youth, and a member of the Board of the Dublin Institute of Technology and the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee. He is also a member of the Irish Sports Council and involved in a number of other sports and athletics bodies.
Alderman Ahern studied accountancy at the School of Commerce, Rathmines and the School of Accountancy, Glasgow. Having worked in the car battery industry he formed his own business in 1975, manufacturing commercial and car batteries.
He is a lifelong active athlete, still competing at veteran class, and has played golf, tennis, hurling, and squash at inter-club level. He also likes Gaelic football and rugby, and shares with his wife Moira her interest in heritage and historic buildings.

Perry Greer
The death occurred on 12 February 2000 of Perry Greer, a former Commissioner of Irish Lights. Percy Howard Greer was elected as a Commissioner on 29 May 1970 and served on the Board until his retirement on 31 December 1987.
He was, at various times, a director of a number of companies, Managing Director of Unidare, Chairman and Director of Irish Shipping, and a member of the Executive Committee of Howth Lifeboat. He had over 50 years' experience in ocean sailing, having completed a three year course at the School of Navigation, London. As a sailor, businessman, and engineer he was greatly respected by his colleagues on the Board of Irish Lights.

Perry Greer
The death occurred on 12 February 2000 of Perry Greer, a former Commissioner of Irish Lights. Percy Howard Greer was elected as a Commissioner on 29 May 1970 and served on the Board until his retirement on 31 December 1987.
He was, at various times, a director of a number of companies, Managing Director of Unidare, Chairman and Director of Irish Shipping, and a member of the Executive Committee of Howth Lifeboat. He had over 50 years' experience in ocean sailing, having completed a three year course at the School of Navigation, London. As a sailor, businessman, and engineer he was greatly respected by his colleagues on the Board of Irish Lights.
