Dublin Corporation representatives

Following her election as Lord Mayor of Dublin on 21 June 1999, Councillor Mary Freehill became ex officio a Commissioner of Irish Lights. She took her seat on the Board on 24 September 1999.

Councillor Freehill is a social worker with the National Rehabilitation Board and has been involved in politics since the 1960s when she worked for the Housing Action Committee. She first became a Dublin City Councillor in 1977 and is currently a Labour Party Councillor for Rathmines. She is particularly concerned about Dublin's housing crisis, traffic, and drug abuse.

Councillor Freehill is the first woman Lord Mayor of Dublin since Carmencita Hederman's election in 1988.

Also, consequent to the local elections in June 1999, Dublin Corporation has nominated Alderman Sean Haughey TD, Councillor Eamonn O'Brien, and Councillor Ciarán Cuffe as the Corporation's representatives on the Board of the Commissioners of Irish Lights.

Alderman Sean Haughey, Fianna Fail, has been an Alderman on Dublin City Council since 1985. He was Lord Mayor in 1989-90, when he was ex officio a Commissioner of Irish Lights. He was a Senator from 1987 to 1992, and has been Fianna Fail Deputy for Dublin North Central since 1992. Alderman Haughey is Vice Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment and Local Government, and is a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs, and of the National Economic and Social Forum.

He says he has a genuine love of the sea as an occasional sailor. Alderman Haughey took his seat on the Board on 29 October 1999.

Councillor Eamonn O'Brien, Labour, represents the Ballymun-Whitehall area and is on the board of Ballymun Regeneration Ltd which is building a new town on Dublin's Northside to replace the Ballymun high-rise flats. He was first elected a Councillor in 1985, and served as Deputy Lord Mayor in 1993-4.

In 1987 he was involved in ridding Dublin City of its gaming machines by having the 1953 Gaming and Lotteries Act rescinded.

Councillor O'Brien has a profound love of the sea and has said he is delighted to be appointed a Commissioner of Irish Lights. He has also been selected to serve for a 5 year term on the board of Dublin Port Company.

Councillor O'Brien took his seat on the Board on 24 September 1999.

Councillor Ciáran Cuffe, Green Party, is an architect and urban designer in private practice in Dublin. He has represented the inner city on Dublin City Council since 1991, and has an interest in transport and planning matters. He holds a yachtmaster's certificate and is a keen amateur sailor. Councillor Cuffe took his seat on the Board on 23 July 1999.
