New Principal Medical Officer
Dr Christoper E. Dick, MB, FFOM, FRCPI, has been appointed Principal Medical Officer to the Commissioners of Irish Lights from 1 July 1999, in succession to Dr Ian Moore.
Dr Dick has spent most of his career in occupational medicine, working for the British National Coal Board, Guinness Ireland Group Ltd, and Trinity College Dublin. At present he is Dean of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and Lecturer in Occupational Medicine in Trinity College.
His interests are hill-walking, fishing, reading, wines, and the culture of south-west France.
Dr Ian Moore
Dr Ian Moore retired as Principal Medical Officer to the Commissioners on 30 June 1999 after almost 14 years' service.
Dr Moore was one of the best known and widely respected Occupational Practitioners in the country. He modernised medical care in Irish Lights through the introduction of in-house electrocardiogram and audiometric tests, blood testing, and annual executive medical examinations. He had a most caring approach and was always willing to give his time and wise counsel to employees.
An active sportsman and single figure golfer in his younger days, Dr Moore relaxes by fishing for salmon and trout, and working in his large garden.
All in Irish Lights wish him well in the years ahead.
Liam McGonagle
Liam D. McGonagle, BA, LL.B, who had served as a Commissioner of Irish Lights since 16 December 1988, died on 14 November 1999. Mr McGonagle served on the Inspecting, Finance and Audit, Management Services, Ship, and Operations/Performance Monitoring Committees of the Board of Commissioners.
The Earl of Meath
The death took place on 19 December 1998 of Anthony Windham Normand Brabazon, 14th Earl of Meath, who served as a Commissioner of Irish Lights from 17 June 1949 until his retirement on 30 June 1994, a period of 46 years.
