CIL withdraws last Major Floating AtoN
24 July 2010
On 24 July, Irish Lights tender Granuaile took the Codling Lanby off station and replaced it with a Type 1 buoy. This new buoy has a focal plane in excess of 5 metres and is fitted with a racon and AIS.
The Codling Lanby was towed to Dublin and was delivered to Hammond Lane for scrapping.
This completes the withdrawal of Major Floating Aids to Navigation (MFAs) in Irish waters. MFAs consist of Lightships and Lanbys. Lanbys are Large Automated Navigation buoys and were first introduced in the 1960s as replacements for lightships on certain stations. The last Irish lightship was withdrawn from the South Rock station off Portavogie in February 2009.
With modern navigating systems and taking account of the amount of traffic and the degree of risk, CIL made the decision to withdraw the MFAs and replace them with Type 1 buoys.
